A Guide to Wheelchairs By Paul Wright
Wheelchairs are an extremely useful mobility device that can be propelled either manually, or with the help of various automated systems. They are used by people who for some reason cannot walk, and needs support or aid to move. However, people who have both walking and sitting disability will need to use wheel-benches, as wheelchairs will not be enough for them.
There are various types of wheelchairs. You can choose the kind you want, depending on your budget and the use you want to put your wheelchair to. Let us check some the types and understand their usability.
Manual wheelchairs
Manual wheelchairs are propelled by the occupant. These wheelchairs usually have large rear wheels, with an average diameter of 20-26 inches. Attendant-propelled manual chairs are different from self-propelled wheelchairs. These are propelled by an attendant using the handles, and thus the back wheels are rimless and often smaller. These wheelchairs are not a permanent solution, and are usually used in hospitals to transfer patients.
Electric wheelchairs
Today, electric wheelchairs are perhaps a better option than manual ones, since it gives the user greater ease and comfort, as well as speed. These wheelchairs are handy as they are separately designed for indoor and outdoor use. The electric wheelchairs are battery operated, and these batteries are the most important aspect of the wheelchair. For this reason, you should choose your electric wheelchair batteries with care.
At times, the power of an electric wheelchair is not enough. In such cases, you would do well to opt for electric wheelchair scooters. These are much harder, and you can use them outside your home to travel on rough terrains.
Some of the accessories that you may have to buy with your electric wheelchairs are the electric wheelchair lifts, electric stair lift and the wheelchair ramps. These will give you greater comfort and ease while using your wheelchairs.
Standing wheelchairs
This form of wheelchair can support the user in near standing position. It can be used as both a wheelchair as well as a standing frame.
Sport wheelchairs
There are wheelchairs that are especially made for use in sports. Different kinds of wheelchair sports require different kinds of wheelchair configuration. These are made for disabled sports that require ability, like rugby, racing, and basketball and so on. These wheelchairs are heavier and cannot be folded. For this reason, most people do not generally use them for everyday purpose.
